The Share Shed is a library of things based in Totnes (Devon, UK). It aims to help local people to borrow items at nominal cost so that they don’t have to buy them for themselves. The aim is to build a more resourceful community, allowing people to connect with each other and share things that they may need just once in a while. This improves their wellbeing, saves them money, reduces the need for them to store things they rarely use and reduces their impact on Earth’s resources.
The Share Shed was set up in 2017, following a community consultation, and with support from the Network of Wellbeing and the National Lottery Community Fund.
In 2019 the Share Shed was selected by the National Lottery to take part in the 2019 People's Projects competition with ITV. It was successful and secured £48,599 to 'go mobile' - rolling out its service to people in Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and South Brent -, and becoming the world's first travelling mobile library of things.
